According to the latest figures from the Health and Safety Executive, over the last seven years (2013/14 to 2019/20) around 4,000 non-fatal injuries to workers occur in the waste and recycling industry each year.

Statistics from RIDDOR also revealed that there were five fatal injuries in 2019/20 within the sector – a figure which is lower than the annual average of nine over the preceding five years. (The statistics for 2020/21 showed the figure was down to three (although this may have been affected by changes to working practices during the COVID-19 Pandemic)

The HSE also found that the rate of fatal injury in waste and recycling (calculated per 100,000 workers active in the industry sector) during 2020/21 was 2.71, only agriculture had a higher fatality rate at 11.37. However, the figure for the waste and recycling sector was significantly below the annual average fatal injury rate over 2016/17 to 2020/21 which was 7.02 per 100,000 employees.

These figures reveal just how dangerous the waste management and recycling industry is, as the average fatality rate for all workers throughout all industries across the five-year period was 0.42.
