What Is the Infected Blood Compensation Authority Scheme (IBCA)?

The Infected Blood Compensation Authority Scheme (IBCA) has been established by the UK Government to deliver financial redress to people who were infected through contaminated NHS blood or blood products.

This historic scheme follows the findings of the Infected Blood Inquiry and is designed to bring justice and recognition to those affected by this devastating scandal.

The IBCA scheme is wide-ranging and legally complex, covering various categories of eligible applicants including those directly infected, their families, and estates of deceased victims.

Who Can Apply to the IBCA Scheme?

The Infected Blood Compensation Scheme is wide-ranging. Applications can be made by the undernoted:

  • All living infected persons
  • Affected persons including spouses, children, and siblings
  • The estates of deceased infected persons

If you believe that you or a family member contracted hepatitis, HIV, or both as a result of contaminated NHS blood or blood products, you may be eligible to apply for compensation through the IBCA.

You may still qualify whether or not you (or your loved one) were previously registered with one of the following support schemes:

  • The Skipton Fund
  • The MacFarlane Trust
  • The Eileen Trust
  • SIBBS (Scottish Infected Blood Support Scheme)
  • EIBSS (England Infected Blood Support Scheme)

How IBCA Compensation Works

  • Payments are tax-free and do not affect means-tested benefits.
  • Multiple applications may be made where more than one infection occurred.
  • Estates may be eligible for up to £1,500 in legal fee support for executry documents.
