A personal injury claim has been won by a man from Essex after he was crushed by a falling Christmas tree in Prague.
The man was on holiday with friends in Prague when he was crushed by a 100 foot tree at a Christmas market in the town square. The accident left him with life threatening injuries to his head, upper body and legs. He was unable to walk for months after the accident and now requires the use of a walking stick.
It was held by the Czech Supreme Court that the local council and the company responsible for organising the market were negligent by not ensuring the tree was bedded in securely.
It is terrifying to think that such a lack of care was taken when setting up the market. This is an area where large numbers of people of all ages would come to celebrate before Christmas. This man has now been left with horrendous injuries because of the negligence of the parties involved in setting up the area. The accident happened over 7 years ago, and I am very glad that he has finally managed to receive some compensation in this case.
I certainly hope that my council has taken a lot more care when setting up my local Christmas market.
