Free legal advice line launched for families Thompsons Solicitors has voiced its disgust over revelations that babies’ remains have been dumped in a mass unmarked grave at an Edinburgh crematorium. For the last 45 years grieving parents who suffered the still birth or premature death of a baby have been refused the ashes of their child from Mortonhall Crematorium in the capital.

Parents have been systematically lied to about the whereabouts of their babies’ ashes for almost half a century leading to fears that hundreds of families could have been affected by the scandal.

Patrick McGuire, partnerThe gross practice is understood to have been policy at the council run crematorium until a change of manager last year. Thompsons Partner Patrick McGuire said: “The situation at Mortonhall is utterly heartbreaking and beggars belief that any right minded person or persons could find this policy acceptable.”

Thompsons has launched a free legal helpline for families at the centre of the scandal and is urging parents to get in touch for advice regarding the situation. Patrick McGuire added: “Compensation is one thing but serious questions need to be asked as to how this was allowed to continue for such a long period of time and most importantly lessons must be learned to ensure no other families are forced to suffer in this way.”

Anyone who has been affected by the Mortonhall scandal can call Thompsons free legal helpline on 08000 810 072.
