A family has received £625,000 in compensation following a High Court ruling.

Sasha Roberts from East Sussex, a promising young academic who was said to have had a brilliant career ahead of her, was in her car on the hard shoulder of the M2 near Kent when the accident happened back in 2006.

Yvan Lucien Vandermeulen was driving a lorry that hit their car, killing Sacha and causing severe injury to her son Lio to the extent that he is now left with brain damage. Much of the compensation will go towards his long-term care. The lorry driver was jailed for 30 months for causing death by dangerous driving. The claim had been brought against the lorry driver's employers as well as the driver himself.

However, Ms Roberts widow Martin Spinelli has criticised the level of compensation received, stating it was not an adequate amount given the severity of the family's loss following the car accident, and also the fact that his wife was about to reach a high point in her career. He has called for the law to be reformed.
