The AA have reported that road damage from the recent cold snap have pushed the number of potholes on UK roads to approximately 1.5 million. The AA have warned that claims for compensation against highway authorities and councils are expected to increase this year due to the defects in the road. Last year local authorities paid out approximately £65 million in compensation for damage to vehicles.
The AA report that they have received approximately three times the amount of claims for pothole damage this February compared to last year. Most claims are for damage caused to wheels.
It is not just roadways that are affected. Potholes and cracks can also appear on pavements or footpaths as a result of water freezing. Landlords and property managers have also been warned to ensure that public exposed areas have not been affected by the cold weather. If landlords etc fail to repair broken walkways and car park areas this could lead to claims for compensation if employees or members of the public become injured.
