A woman has received compensation after slipping in spilt prawn cocktail in a Marks and Spencer store. She sustained a broken hip as a result of the fall.
Janet Morritt, 71, had been out shopping in her local Marks and Spencer store in Perth at the time of the accident. As she was walking down an aisle she slipped in a puddle, causing her to fall against a chilled food cabinet.
The impact of the fall caused her to break her hip. She was forced to stay in hospital for eight days and had to have a screw and a plate inserted in her hip. She now has to use a wheelchair to move long distances and is unable to drive.
She claimed compensation for these injuries but Marks and Spencer refused to admit fault, claiming that she should have watched where she put her feet. The court did not see it this way however, and upheld her claim, awarding her £7,500 in compensation.
