An 89-year-old woman was injured in a road traffic accident in Airdrie at 1.45pm on Monday. She was hit by a single-decker bus in Stirling Street near to Broomknoll Street and was taken to Monklands District General Hospital, where she was treated for head injuries. However she died later as a result of her serious injuries. One onlooker said the sound of the impact was ‘like two cars crashing together’. The driver of the bus was uninjured but very shaken. Police cordoned off the scene and took statements from witnesses.
She was later named by police as Martha Cowie, who lived in the town’s Rannoch Road. The 89-year-old was described as a ‘lovely woman’ by her neighbours, where she had lived for 50 years.
A spokeswoman for Strathclyde Police said: "The male driver of the bus was uninjured. A report on the circumstances will be prepared for the procurator fiscal.
"Officers from Motherwell road policing have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident, and are appealing to members of the public who witnessed the accident to contact them."
A report into the circumstances of her death is being prepared for the Procurator Fiscal.
