This week (19th – 25th November 2018) marks Brake’s annual Road Safety Week.

Brake is the UK’s largest road safety charity. Their aim is simple; prevent accidents from happening in the first place. They work tirelessly to “raise awareness about road safety and needless deaths and injuries year-round”. Road Safety Week is utilised to raise safety awareness. Where accidents have already occurred, they provide vital support to victims of road traffic accidents.

bike smart road safety week

This year’s Road Safety Week has a particular emphasis on bike safety, with slogan Bike Smart. We promote cycling as healthy activity; yet cycling on roads is a health risk due to vehicles. More than 38,000 cyclists and motorcyclists are killed or injured on the road in Britain every year.  Areas of campaign for change include better design of HGVs to protect the safety of cyclists (the view of a cyclist can be hidden for HGV drivers), educating drivers on the vulnerability of cyclists (and other vulnerable road users including horse riders), and the power of infrastructure – if we echod European cities with cycle paths then vulnerable road users wouldn’t even have to cycle. As a driver you can be proactively safer by using the following:
