I love food and trying out all sorts of unusual food and I am rather intrigued and perhaps a little excited to see that Spoon Café Bistro in Edinburgh now has grey squirrel on the menu. The bistro has described the dish as the “ultimate ethical food”. They said that as the grey squirrels were being killed to protect Scotland’s native red squirrel so it “made sense” to eat them.
However not everyone agrees and welfare charity OneKind is concerned that it will encourage the mistreatment of wild animals.
Grey squirrels are free range, low in fat and are a local source of food. The Scottish SPCA said it had not objections to eating them as long as they are caught and killed humanely.
Mrs Thom and her friends went along to try the dish earlier today but it is proving popular with the locals and had sold out by the time they arrived. Apparently it has been sold out every day since it went on the menu last Friday. What is the strangest thing you have ever tasted? If anyone manages to try the dish let me know if it is good!!
