Laura Blane, Partner

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has published its annual report on mesothelioma deaths in the UK, revealing that 2,218 people died from the disease in 2023. While this marks a modest drop of 62 deaths compared to 2022, the figures remain a reminder of the devastating legacy of asbestos exposure in the UK.

The current numbers are significantly lower than the average of 2,508 deaths per year recorded between 2011 and 2020. The HSE notes that most of the exposure that led to these deaths occurred decades ago, often before the 1980s, when asbestos use was widespread in industries such as construction, shipbuilding, and manufacturing.

Though deaths are expected to gradually decline over the coming decade, mesothelioma remains one of the UK’s deadliest occupational diseases, and thousands of families continue to live with the consequences of past failings in workplace safety.

At Thompsons Solicitors, we have long fought for justice on behalf of those affected by asbestos-related conditions, including mesothelioma, asbestosis, pleural thickening, and asbestos-related lung cancer. Our dedicated asbestos team, led by Partner Laura Blane, represents individuals and families across Scotland seeking compensation and accountability.

“While we welcome the gradual decline in mesothelioma deaths, these figures are a reminder that the impact of asbestos exposure is still very much with us,” said Laura Blane, Head of the Asbestos Team at Thompsons.

“Behind every number is a family who has lost a loved one to a disease that was entirely preventable. At Thompsons, we are committed to making sure those affected receive the justice and compensation they deserve, while continuing to campaign for full asbestos removal from public and private buildings across Scotland.”

The fight against asbestos is far from over. Many schools, hospitals, and workplaces still contain asbestos materials, and the risk of exposure remains especially for workers in construction, maintenance, and demolition roles. Raising awareness, ensuring proper regulation, and supporting affected individuals remain crucial priorities.

As part of our commitment to supporting those impacted, we work closely with Action on Asbestos, Scotland’s leading industrial injury and disease charity. Action on Asbestos provide vital emotional and practical support to those affected by mesothelioma, lung cancer, and other asbestos-related and occupational diseases. Their work is an essential lifeline for many of our clients and their families, and we’re proud to stand alongside them in the fight for justice and care.

If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with mesothelioma or another asbestos-related condition, our experienced legal team is here to help. We understand the medical, emotional, and financial toll these diagnoses bring, and we are proud to stand beside families in their pursuit of justice.
