At Thompson’s we would like to reassure all our clients that as far as possible we are operating as normal. The health and safety of our staff and clients is our primary concern during this outbreak and as such we are reviewing the situation on a regular basis and will be adapting our working practices following government guidelines. However, we have had to make some minor changes to how we are doing things.

Following Government guidelines, we have temporarily closed all of our offices and our staff are now all working from home using secure technologies to ensure they are able to continue to progress with existing and new cases as normal. All face to face meetings have been cancelled, however we are continuing to hold these meetings via phone and video calls. All the team are contactable on their direct dial numbers and email should you need to speak with your solicitor, please do not hesitate to talk to us about anything during this time.

We know these are uncertain and unsettling times for many of our clients, and the wider population, and things might look a little different for the foreseeable future. But our focus remains on our dedication, knowledge and strength that we provide to all our clients. We will continue to provide updates over the coming days and weeks in accordance with official guidelines and to keep everyone informed of the situation.

As always, for any concerns, advice and updates on your case; Talk to Thompsons.

Causes of Lung Cancer

Factory Chimneys with SmokeLung cancer is accountable for around one in seven (13%) of all new cancer cases, making it the UK's deadliest form of the disease. As the condition is so prevalent, it is important to take note of the leading causes so that we can all give ourselves the best chance of avoiding this common killer.

What are the leading causes of lung cancer?

The biggest cause of lung cancer, responsible for the overwhelming majority of cases, is smoking. According to Cancer Research, smoking accounts for 86% of lung cancer cases, while passive smoking is responsible for 3% of lung cancer cases.

The remaining 11% of lung cancer cases occur as a result of various hazards, including:

  • Radon gas – this occurs naturally in the environment and, as it is colourless and odourless, can build up unnoticed in homes and other buildings, making it particularly dangerous.
  • Air pollution – a European study has shown that between five per cent and seven per cent of lung cancer in non-smokers is caused by air pollution.
  • Other respiratory disease – if you have previously been diagnosed with another respiratory disease, such as silicosis or tuberculosis, you may be at a greater risk of developing lung cancer.
  • Workplace exposure – many chemicals used in industry are known to be carcinogenic. The known hazards include:
    • Asbestos
    • Silica dust
    • Diesel fumes
    • Arsenic
    • Beryllium
    • Cadmium and chromium
    • Cobalt
    • Dioxins
    • Soots

Short, low level exposures to these substances do not result in lung cancer – regular exposure over a long period has the potential to cause lung cancer.

Thinking about a compensation claim?

If lung cancer does occur, the impact on the victim and their family is likely to be devastating. If your or a loved one's lung cancer was caused, at least in part, by the actions or inactions of someone else, you should not have to suffer without receiving the full amount of redress that is owed to you.
