In 2013 campaigners claimed that Scotland had the worst pedestrian accident rate in all of Europe, with Living Streets, a pedestrian safety group, revealing that pedestrians accounted for 68 per cent of road deaths in built-up areas; this compared against a Europe-wide average of 37 per cent.
As a response, Thompsons Solicitors, Scotland's largest and leading personal injury solicitor firm, has now joined forces with another firm to launch Pedestrian Law Scotland. Sadly, the move to create the distinct pedestrian claims body seems necessary; over recent years Scotland has seen an increased number of cases of pedestrians killed or seriously injured as a result of incidents involving cars, buses, motorbikes and lorries.
It is hoped that Pedestrian Law Scotland will create a strong and persuasive voice for pedestrians on Scotland's roads, positively influencing policy while also providing "pedestrians with unrivalled, specialist, personal representation with accident claims".
In 2012 more than 25,000 pedestrians in the UK sustained injury in road traffic accidents, with 420 suffering fatal injuries and nearly 6,000 sustaining serious life-changing injuries.
Thompsons' is Scotland's leading firm of personal injury solicitors and secures over £1 million every week for its clients. It is rated number one by legal directory "Legal 500" and has won both Firm of the Year at the Scottish Law Awards and Litigation Firm of the Year at the Law Awards of Scotland.
