Thompsons Solicitors is today (Wednesday) renewing its calls for a full public inquiry into the baby ash scandal in Scotland. The Scottish Government has announced it intends to review the legislation around cremations in a bid to prevent a repeat of what happened at Mortonhall and other crematoria across the country.
However, Thompsons Partner Patrick McGuire believes the Government is not going far enough to get to the bottom of the baby ash scandal. He said: “A full public inquiry is the only way the families affected by the baby ash scandal will get the answers they so badly need to help them properly grieve for their lost babies and move forwards. Anything short of this is nothing more than window dressing and will not provide the truth about what has actually gone on at Mortonhall and other crematoria across Scotland.”
The Government’s proposals to set up a commission to review the current law has disappointed bereaved parents and campaigners who want to see a thorough and transparent inquiry into the scandal to get the whole truth about what happened to their babies. Mr McGuire added: “The latest developments will come as a huge blow to parents who are desperately fighting for some shred of truth about what happened to the remains of their babies. The only way their voices will be properly heard is through a public inquiry which is open and transparent and will allow them to be fully immersed in the process.
“Setting up a commission is effectively carrying out an investigation behind closed doors and with these half-hearted measures the Scottish Government is denying bereaved parents the basic right to justice.”
Campaigners have pledged to keep fighting for a full inquiry and Thompsons will continue to give its full support to the campaign. ENDS
