Greg WhyteWith each passing week we at Thompsons Solicitors hear more and more about asbestos in schools both from compensation claims, as well as general public concern about the risks regarding how widespread the problem is.

Fortunately, there are campaigners out there who are taking action to try and ensure that when certain sectors of society do come into contact with asbestos they know what to do. Pressure from a number of trade unions on government has lead to a publication of a guide for school head teachers in the UK to give advice on what to do if they were to encounter asbestos in their schools.

I blogged earlier this year about the surprising amount of asbestos in Scotland’s schools and what little is being done about the potential it has to cause serious health problems and diseases amongst pupils and teachers alike.

Previous blogs have dealt with the statistics of asbestos found in schools but as a reminder, the prevalence of asbestos in the UK’s schools is has caused the deaths of 140 teachers from mesothelioma, an asbestos related disease, in the last ten years alone.

Thompsons is the UK’s leading specialist industrial disease compensation firm of solicitors.  Together with the union’s we believe that any moves to highlight the presence of asbestos in schools can only be positive and we welcome the publication of this new guide. Sadly the perception of asbestos is that it is something “that wouldn’t affect me”.

However, with a rising number of asbestos related stories in the media regarding schools and even the Palace of Westminster hopefully teachers across the UK will take heed of the guide and make sure they know what to do should they encounter the potentially lethal substance.
