Scotland’s leading personal injury firm and campaigners for better health and safety in the workplace, Thompsons Solicitors, has welcomed figures which show a reduction in the number of oil and gas leaks on offshore installations.  However they stressed that more needs to be done to make rigs safer.

The report from the Health and Safety Executive revealed that the number of major or significant hydrocarbon releases in 2010/11 fell to 73 from 85 the previous year.   This year’s reduction marks an improvement but remains higher than the 61 recorded incidents in 2008/9.

The new offshore safety figures also revealed a fall in the total number of “dangerous occurrences” including hydrocarbon releases and equipment failure and a drop in the number of major injuries from 50 to 42.

Partner at Thompsons Solicitors in Aberdeen, Chris Gordon, said:

“Whether it’s after the Piper Alpha tragedy or any other accident on the rigs, Thompsons has stood side by side with the victims in their efforts for justice and improvements to working conditions offshore.

“These figures are a step in the right direction, but it is clear that more must be done to improve health and safety in the offshore oil and gas industry.

“At Thompsons we believe that if you have an accident on the rigs that wasn’t your fault that you have the right to demand redress.  No worker should go out to the rigs and expect to be injured.

“While these figures would suggest that some improvements have been made, the number of potentially dangerous leaks is still higher than in 2008/9 so there’s still a lot of work to do to make the rigs safe.”
