At Thompsons Solicitors, our people are the driving force behind our success. In this edition of Team Talks, we sit down with Dorota Gryniuk to learn more about her incredible journey, what motivates her, and some of her most memorable moments at Thompsons Solicitors Scotland.

Introduction:

Hi, I’m Dorota, and I’m an Accounts Payable Assistant in the Finance team based in our Edinburgh office.

How long have you been with Thompsons?

My first-year anniversary is just around the corner, so I’m still the “new one,” but it feels like I’ve been here for years (in a good way)!

Professional Journey:

What inspired you to pursue a career at Thompsons?

Funny story – I wasn’t planning on joining another law firm, but my recruiter convinced me to meet Thompsons, saying “They’re different – you’ll fit right in!”. And he couldn’t have been more right.

I’ve always been curious about the “why” behind things and the legal side of how the world works. At uni, I almost chose legal services instead of accounting (I thought accounting would mean fewer reports – turns out, not really!). And I’ll admit it, “Suits” might have played a small part in that curiosity!

What do you enjoy most about your role?

The most rewarding part of the job is knowing that what I do, even behind the scenes, contributes to helping people. Being part of a firm that genuinely cares makes all the difference.

I also love that I get to learn and grow here. My role is in Accounts Payable, but I’ve had the chance to get involved with other areas across finance – perfect for keeping my ADHD brain engaged and challenged.

Memorable Moments:

Can you share a favourite memory or achievement from your time here?

Rather than one big moment, I take pride in how quickly I found my footing – becoming independent within just a couple of weeks. Since then, I’ve helped streamline a few processes and always make sure to deliver on my promises. If I say I’ll do it, it gets done.

Let's get to know Dorota - Personal & Fun Questions

What are your hobbies or interests outside of work?

I love books – mainly buying them faster than I can read them! I also love being outdoors, whether it’s mountain trekking or long beach walks. I have a Belgian Malinois girl who keeps me busy with all her energy and need for attention.

What do you think makes the Thompsons team special?

It’s the dedication to helping people. Everyone genuinely cares – about the clients, the work, and each other. That kind of commitment isn’t something you find everywhere.

What’s something interesting about you that most people don’t know?

I moved to the UK on my own in my early 20s – didn’t know anyone or much about the country, but I went for it anyway. Since then, I’ve moved houses around 20 times (yes, really!). And here’s an odd one – I can’t stand receiving flowers. They should stay in gardens, not wilt in my living room.

What motivates you to do your best at work?

I’m motivated by pride in what I do. I like knowing my work is reliable and contributes to something bigger. I’m a bit of a perfectionist – I’d rather take a bit longer and get it right the first time than rush and redo it later.

Favourite book, movie, or TV show?

I haven’t watched TV for over a decade, but I’ll always have a soft spot for Dr. House – at least the first few seasons. And I love crime novels – Jo Nesbo, Harlan Coben, Ian Rankin are my go-tos.

Do you have a quote or mantra that inspires you?

I have a few! My top ones are:

  • “Short pencil is better than long memory.”
  • “This too shall pass.”
  • “What you’re not changing, you’re choosing.”
  • “If you don’t ask, the answer is always no.”

They’re little reminders to keep perspective and stay proactive – and they’ve never failed me.

What advice would you give to someone starting at Thompsons?

Be curious. Ask questions. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes – everything’s fixable. It’s better to ask and learn than stay quiet and stuck.

Any tips for maintaining a good work-life balance?

Know your worth and set boundaries – starting with yourself. You can lie to everyone else, but not to yourself. Be on your own side, always.
