Volvo diesel claims
Like many other motor manufacturers, Volvo is now embroiled in the diesel emissions scandal which first hit the headlines in 2015 when VW were found to have been fitting 'defeat devices' (also known as cheat devices) in their vehicles.
Now, after numerous investigations around the world, almost all major automotive groups, including Volvo, are suspected of using defeat devices to enable their vehicles to manipulate how the engines run during standardised testing.
It has been widely found that in real-world driving conditions the engines produce much higher levels of NOx pollutants, meaning that manufacturers have misled consumers and are, potentially, breaching regulations brought in to reduce harmful chemicals in exhaust fumes which are health hazards and damaging to the environment.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) says such gases are linked to cardiovascular and respiratory diseases and also exacerbate asthma and bronchitis symptoms.
Bad results for Volvo in ADAC testing
In 2015, ADAC, the General German Automobile Club, carried out tests on a range of cars sold in the EU.
The organisation ran two tests; first, the 'New European Driving Cycle' (NEDC) standardised test, then the 'Worldwide harmonised Light vehicles Test Procedure' (WLTP) which has been widely accepted as a better way to test fuel consumption and emissions.
In the ADAC testing, the Volvo S60 D4 was the worst performing vehicle; emitting more than 14 times NEDC readings when put through the WLTP tests.
In response to the test results, a Volvo spokesperson claimed the actual vehicle tested was faulty, saying that the "emission control system was out of order".
Damning DfT testing for Volvo
In 2016, the Department for Transport (DfT) tested 37 diesel models made by major manufacturers and found huge differences in NOx emissions under real-world driving conditions when compared to laboratory testing.
The Euro 5 Volvo V40 was found to be more than eight times over the permitted NOx levels of 180mg/km. This represented the third highest NOx emissions across the Euro 5 vehicles tested.
Volvo vehicles affected
In theory, all Volvo diesel models could have been fitted with defeat devices, but the following post-2009 diesel models are potentially implicated in the scandal at the present time:
- Volvo C30 / C70
- Volvo S40 / S60 / S80 / S90
- Volvo V40 / V50 / V60 / V70 / V90
- Volvo XC40 / XC60 / XC70 / XC90
