Vauxhall diesel vehicle claims

In 2016, the Vauxhall Insignia diesel car hit the headlines when the Department for Transport (DfT) published the report on its independent emissions testing of 37 top-selling vehicles. The diesel cars and vans were all tested in real-world driving conditions and not one of them registered nitrogen oxide (NOx) within the legal limit of 180mg/km.

The Vauxhall Insignia was the worst-performing diesel vehicle tested by the DfT, clocking up ten times the amount of legal NOx pollutants permissible at 1,800 mg/km.

Germany's Federal Motor Transport Authority, the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA) have been investigating Vauxhall's alleged use of cheat devices since 2015.  Following a legal hearing which concluded in January 2020, the KBA imposed a mandatory recall of a number of Opel models in January 2020.

An earlier report said that by early 2018 the KBA had discovered at least five illegal software devices in Opel vehicles. It is claimed that Opel, Vauxhall's sister manufacturer, had been fitting engines with an impermissible defeat device which activated during standardized testing to reduce emissions.

The recalled models, all manufactured between 2012 and 2016, were the Zafira 1.6 and 2.0 litre CDTi, Insignia 2.0 CDTi and Cascada 2.0 CDTi. Around 100,000 vehicles were officially recalled.

All Vauxhall models could potentially be affected

Although only four models were subject to the German recall, the DfT tests included a Vauxhall Astra, a Vauxhall Corsa and, the greatest polluter of all vehicles tested, the Vauxhall Insignia. All Vauxhall models recorded NOx emissions of more than 1000 mg/km.

It is reasonable to believe that any Vauxhall diesel vehicle manufactured between 2009 and 2020, may have been fitted with a cheat device.
