Nissan Diesel Vehicle Claims

Nissan is part of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, a French-Japanese alliance of automotive companies. Renault and Nissan have been partners since 1999 and, following a deal that saw the group gain a controlling interest in Mitsubishi in 2016, it adopted the new name.

The Nissan parent company has so far strongly denied any wrongdoing in relation to the fitting of cheat devices in its engines, but various reports have found emissions anomalies in Nissan vehicles.

In 2017, the South Korean government found Nissan to be guilty of using defeat devices and the country banned the sale of several of the alliances models including the Nissan Qashqai SUV.

Theie independent real-world emissions testing found that Nissan's emissions-reducing Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system, stopped operating when the engine's temperature reached 35 degrees Celsius.

A spokesperson for the South Korean government said that typically, cars turned off the emissions reduction systems to prevent overheating when the engine temperature reached 50 degrees Celsius. “The Qashqai was the only vehicle that turned it off at 35 degrees.”

A freedom of information request has revealed that the Department for Transport (DfT) wrote to Nissan after testing the Nissan petrol Qashqai in real-world driving conditions and found it to be emitting much higher levels of pollutants, "up to 15 times", than the standardised test results.

It is alleged that the DfT asked Nissan to recall and fix all affected vehicles, but the manufacturer refused.

Investigations into which Nissan diesel models were fitted with cheat devices are still ongoing; however it is believed the following models were potentially affected:
