Fiat diesel vehicle claims
The manufacturer of Fiat motor vehicles is now Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) following the merger of the two companies in 2014.
Following the emergence of the Dieselgate scandal in 2015, a number of investigations into Fiat diesel vehicles by independent bodies in the US, France and Germany have found irregularities in the emissions outputs of many Fiat diesel vehicles when subjected to standardised testing.
In 2016, the German federal motor transport authority, the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA), reported its finding of a defeat device in the Fiat 500 X. Although full official details have not been published, Reuters reported that a defeat device was enabled to switch off a filter around an hour after a 20-minute emissions test procedure had ended.
These allegations follow earlier claims involving a different device.
According to the German investigations, a number of Fiat Multijet engines in domestic and commercial vehicles are implicated in the Fiat diesel emissions scandal.
Fiat models affected include:
- Fiat 500 (including X, C and L models)
- Fiat Bravo
- Fiat Doblo
- Fiat Ducato
- Fiat Fiorino
- Fiat Panda
- Fiat Punto (including Evo and Grande models)
- Fiat Qubo
- Fiat Scudo
- Fiat Talento
- Fiat Tipo
In July 2020, news hit the headlines of office raids on Fiat by authorities from Germany, Italy and Switzerland. The alleged use by Fiat of defeat devices (also known as cheat devices) is now the subject of a £5 billion lawsuit and it's estimated that almost 500,000 vehicles in England and Wales could be affected.
In the US, Fiat Chrysler has already settled diesel emissions claims valued at around $800million.
Other FCA marques involved in the diesel emissions scandal
Fiat-Chrysler also makes Jeep and Alfa Romeo vehicles and these makes have also been implicated.
In March 2017, the consumer group Which? tested a Jeep vehicle which was found to produce more than nine times the Euro 5 legal NOx emissions limit.
