Renault Diesel Vehicle Claims
Currently, investigations are still ongoing into whether Renault vehicles were fitted with cheat devices that reduced the amount of pollutants emitted during standardised testing. However, it is estimated that around 700,000 Renault vehicles registered in the UK may have been affected.
If you owned or leased one of these vehicles, it is likely that you were lied to about emissions and how polluting the vehicle is/was.
In November 2016, Reuters reported that motor manufacturer Renault was facing criminal investigation in France following an inquiry carried out by the French watchdog body, the Directorate General for Competition Policy, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control (DGCCRF).
The French industry ministry said in a statement that it would be up to the courts to decide what action should be taken over the "suspected breaches".
It is alleged that Renault, and other manufacturers, fitted engines with technology that purged toxic pollutants known as nitrogen oxides (NOx) from exhaust fumes. However, in real-world driving, this technology switched off and the levels of pollutants being emitted soared.
Many manufacturers, including Renault, told an investigation in France that the defeat devices fitted in their vehicles were legal under a European exemption which allowed their use if the purging technology was deemed to put the engine at risk.
Renault explained that the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) technology, which reduced NOx emissions in its top-selling diesel engines, had been found to cause serious turbo clogging problems. It is alleged that engineers programmed a shut-down of EGR outside a "thermal window" of certain temperatures. This meant that regulatory tests carried out at room temperature produced low emissions readings, however, out on the road, the emissions rocketed.
Which Renault models are affected?
Early investigations show that the following diesel models may be affected:
- Renault Clio
- Renault Captur
- Renault Espace
- Renault Megane
- Renault Scenic
