Much of my work in obtaining compensation for victims centres around those with diseases, be it industrial, hospital associated or blood-borne.
One of my longer term campaigns is for those who were contaminated with Hepatitis C through defective blood products while in hospital.
It doesn’t take much to imagine how horrific it must be to be recovering from a routine hospital operation, only to be told that, through a hospital error, you now have Hepatitis C. Monetary damages do not even begin to compensate how a victim must be feeling at that time.
We at Thompsons play an active part in improving the lives of victims of Hep C and making sure that mistakes like this don’t happen again.
The Scottish Government have launched a new campaign for those at risk of having Hep C to come forward for testing. The communications campaign is aimed at tackling the current Hepatitis C epidemic by increasing knowledge of the virus among at-risk groups, and encouraging them to come forward and be tested.
Thompsons support this campaign. Knowledge and awareness of the virus is vital – especially as early diagnosis of the virus can lead to complete cure in up to 80% of people.
Some people contract hepatitis C through drug use though 8 in 10 people currently infected are not currently injecting drugs, a percentage of these will be those negligently affected. This percentage are the group that Thompsons can fight for compensation for, as well as offering support.
