The Edinburgh based Health and Safety Executive has launched a campaign aimed at educating tradesmen about the continuing dangers of asbestos exposure. Deaths from mesothelioma, an asbestos related cancer, are on the rise in Scotland and this in turn is leading to many compensation claims being made.

Research has shown that the majority of tradesmen think that asbestos is a thing of the past and that they are not at risk. However, asbestos can be present in any building built or refurbished before the year 2000. Therefore, the deadly substance remains a real risk to almost every tradesman.

There are currently 4000 asbestos related deaths each year and the campaign’s aim is to warn tradesmen of the dangers which they continue to face, and also how to protect themselves from hazardous exposure.  If the campaign is successful it should prevent another generation of tradesmen falling victim to asbestos related diseases. Those who are currently suffering from an asbestos related disease are likely to be entitled to compensation from their employer.
