A mesothelioma sufferer received the payment after making a compensation claim against his former employer. He had worked for a steel company which took apart locomotives in order to sell the steel. For a two year period from 1966 and 1968 he had dismantled locomotives which contained asbestos insulation. He regularly removed this insulation by hand without any form of protective equipment.
In 2008, he began to experience problems breathing and a pain in his abdomen and after going to hospital to seek treatment he was diagnosed with the asbestos related disease mesothelioma.
He sued his former employer, John Cashmore Ltd, for compensation in the Court of Justice in London, using a speeded up route to court which is available for mesothelioma claims. He argued that he was subjected to unsafe working conditions and that he was not warned about the dangers of working with asbestos.
The court held in favour of his arguments and awarded him a compensation settlement of £160,000.
