A haulage worker has received a substantial compensation payout after being injured in an accident at work. The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, worked as a shunter helping load pallets on to wagons.
His injury occurred while he was driving a barrow truck for a UK haulage company. He had been reversing the truck in order to straighten it out and then move forward. However, as he did this the truck skidded and spun, throwing him off. When he fell off his leg became trapped between the truck and a wall, crushing his tibia in the process.
He was in extreme pain and had to have an operation after the accident. He still only has limited mobility in his right leg.
He made a compensation claim against his employer on that ground that the employer failed to maintain a safe workplace. His employer agreed to settle and he received a compensation payout of £245,000.
Research has shown that the transport industry is one of the most dangerous areas to work in, with thousands of people being involved in accidents like this each year.
