Specialist trade union lawyers Thompsons has helped a Unite member secure £16,500 compensation following an accident at work leaving him with permanent damage to his thumb.

Robert Kerr who works for paper manufacturing company UPM suffered a loss of tissue in his left thumb while operating machinery in May 2010. Mr Kerr’s thumb got caught between two rollers while removing paper from a super calendar machine.

As a member of Unite, Mr Kerr was entitled to full legal support from Thompsons who intimated a claim on his behalf. The insurers denied liability on the grounds that Mr Kerr had operated the machine several times but it was put to the insurers that the Provisions and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 had been breached because there were no guards fitted to the dangerous parts.

Mr Kerr was awarded £16,500 for his injuries and ongoing discomfort as a result the accident. Mr Kerr said: “It was a huge relief to have the support of Unite following my accident. They put me in touch with Thompsons who dealt with everything from start to finish and I’m really pleased with the result.”
