Ian Black recently received compensation after sustaining a back injury at work. This was not the first time that he had injured his back.
Part of Mr Black’s role at work was to manually wind cable. This was despite his employer being aware that he had a pre-existing back problem. The strain of winding the cable at work caused further injury to his back on top of this.
As a result of this injury Mr Black was forced to undertake extensive medical treatment and was unable to work for several months. It was then that he decided to make a claim for compensation.
He made his claim on the ground that his employer failed to take his pre-existing back problem into account when assessing the risks involved in his role. He also argued that he had not been trained properly which had further added to the seriousness of his injury.
His employer agreed to settle and he ended up receiving £10,000 in compensation for his injury.
