Specialist trade union lawyers Thompsons has secured another successful compensation claim for a Unite member injured at work.
Robert Agnew fractured his wrist in three places when he lost his balance and fell while trying to access machinery during the course of his work. The accident happened in March 2011 and as a result Mr Agnew was unable to attend work for ten weeks which left him with a significant loss of earnings.
Thompsons Solicitors alleged that his employers, British Polythene Industries (BPI), had breached the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations, Manual Handling Regulations and Workplace (Health and Safety) Regulations claiming this had contributed to his accident.
With the help of witness evidence liability was accepted and Mr Agnew was awarded £12,000 in compensation. Thompsons Partner Wendy Durie said: “This is yet another example of an accident at work which could have been avoided. Unfortunately for Mr Agnew workplace safety had lapsed which resulted in a fairly serious injury. I am satisfied that he has been recompensed adequately and also that his employer has taken steps to address the safety issues at BPI.” As a union member Mr Agnew was entitled to legal support from trade union lawyers Thompsons at no cost. Mr Agnew said he was delighted with the service Thompsons provided: “Everything was perfect; I had no problems at all. Once I contacted my union I was passed to Thompsons and I was kept informed all the way”. He added, “There was a hold up with my work providing pay lines but Thompsons handled all this and resolved the problem quickly and easily. Overall, I was really pleased.”
