A woman recently received compensation after sustaining a manual handling injury at work. She had worked as an administrative assistant before her accident. On the day she sustained her injury, she was asked to collect some boxes from another department. As the boxes were heavy she asked for help, but there was none available. She decided to take a trolley and move them herself. There was no lift in the building however, and in trying to control the full trolley while going down a flight of stairs she injured her shoulder.
After seeking medical advice, it was found that she had torn a muscle in her shoulder. She was forced to undergo surgery and still experiences discomfort and reduced mobility in her shoulder. She claimed compensation on the grounds that her employer had failed to carry out a proper risk assessment of the procedure for moving the boxes down the stairs, that they had failed to provide any training, and that they had failed to provide a suitable trolley for moving the boxes down the stairs.
Her claim was successful and she received £65,000 in compensation.
