Metal on Metal Hip Replacements

There is evidence that complications with metal on metal hip replacements, especially the DePuy ASR models, can lead to health problems, if you have been affected by one of these faulty implants, you should seek advice in relation to your possible entitlement to compensation.

Metal on metal hip replacements are nothing new. They have been used for many years now and have been an implant staple of such manufacturers as Zimmer and DePuy (part of the Johnson and Johnson group).  However, only the DePuy ASR XL Acetabular System and DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System have enough evidence of defect and consequent health problems to have necessitated a recall by the manufacturers.

In a series of documented cases it was found that ASR's parts were found to be leaking dangerous amounts of cobalt and chromium into the bodies of recipients. Furthermore, there was evidence that this can cause non-cancerous tumours and damage muscle tissue.  Symptoms can be debilitating and may lead to reduced mobility and loss of independence. They include the following:

  • Groin or hip pain
  • Trouble walking
  • Clicking of your hip
  • Inflammation
  • Loss of feeling in your legs

Furthermore, although the DePuy ASR systems are the most notorious, there are other metal on metal systems that may be a risk. These include the following:

  • Corin Cormet hip implants
  • Biomet M2a-38 and M2a-Magnum implants
  • Finsbury hip implants
  • Birmingham Modular Total Hip Replacement (BHMH Product)
  • Zimmer Durom hip implants
