A driver who killer her pregnant stepdaughter on New Year’s day has been sentenced to four and a half years in jail.
The driver, Ceya Ozkan, who is wheelchair bound, was found to be twice the legal drink-drive limit when she crashed her car into a tree on 1st January 2009.
The court heard how Ozkan’s daughter had feared for her life and she had tried to grab the steering wheel from her step mother just moments before the crash. Another passenger also repeatedly told Ozkan to stop driving after being alarmed by her erratic driving.
Witnesses reported that they saw the vehicle travelling up to 70 mph in a 30 mph zone immediately before the crash. Two other adults and three children were also seriously hurt as a result of the accident.
It was discovered at the hearing that none of the passengers within the vehicle were wearing a seatbelt.
