A man who was left blind and semi paralysed after an accident at work has been successful in obtaining compensation.

Mark Downs, a welder, was seriously injured during the course of his employment when a five and a half tonne metal sheet that was being lifted swung out of place and struck him.

The injuries suffered by Mr Downs were so severe that he had to be resuscitated twice on the way to hospital. As a result of the accident Mr Downs has been left blind, paralysed down his left hand side and he has no sense of smell.

The judge who heard the case found that Hadee Engineering, Mr Downs employers, were wholly liable for the accident and awarded Mr Downs compensation. The judge held that Hadee Engineering had breached a number of health and safety regulations.

Compensation was claimed on Mr Downs behalf for the injuries and losses he sustained in addition to the cost of his long term care.
