Last year World Health Organization released European status report on road safety, which aimed to work towards safer roads and healthier transport choices.
It involved statistics and numerical data for road and traffic accidents. In Europe car crashes result in 120,000 deaths every year, 2.4.million injuries and great economic burden. In addition to the pain and suffering experienced by the families of loved ones, road traffic injuries cause a substantial economic loss to society: it may be up to 3% of a country’s gross domestic product. Furthermore, road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death among people between 5-29 years old. Vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists and users of motorized two-wheelers constitute 39% of all road traffic injury fatalities.
It also stressed the necessity of governments to protect all road users and not neglect the needs of pedestrians and cyclists. Furthermore, the report points out the devastating effects traffic accidents may leave on people’s lives even if the injuries have not been fatal. It can be emotionally and psychologically devastating and many people may be driven into poverty by the loss of the family breadwinner or the prolonged health and social care requires for people with disabilities, as the costs of care and rehabilitation are considerable.
