Corus Fined £240,000 Following Death of a Lorry Driver
Corus the international company that makes steel have been fined £240,000 following an accident on one of its sites that caused the death of a lorry driver.
The lorry driver, a 22 year old male, was tragically crushed to death when steel plates weighing three tonnes fell on top of him. The accident occurred as the lorry driver was helping load the steel plates on to a lorry. The steel plates became unstable and fell after being lifted by a crane.
The Health and Safety Executive investigated the accident and found that the systems Corus had in place for loading steel was unsafe. The Health and Safety Executive prosecuted Corus and they plead guilty to breaching Section 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
