Construction Accident Compensation Claims

City Building (Glasgow) a limited liability partnership set up by Glasgow City Council has been fined £20,000 after an apprentice fell through a hole in the floor on a building site and broke his neck.

Apprentice joiner Steven Brown was working on the site of the new Arden Primary School in Thornliebank when the accident happened.

He was in intensive care for more than a week, and had a metal plate inserted in his neck after the four-meter plunge.

Glasgow Sheriff Court heard that he was about to fix plywood coverings over holes in the floor, but tripped and stumbled onto one of the sheets of plywood crashing through it and landing on the floor below.

City Building admitted failing to put proper measures in place to stop employees falling through the holes in the floor in June 2007. The company was fined £20,000.

The court was told that since the accident City Building has made changes to its health and safety procedures.

The court was also told that Mr Brown had received £22,000 in compensation from City Building following the accident.
