Falls from Heights.....Why is it important?
Falls from height are responsible for many serious and fatal injuries every year. In fact, falls from height are the single largest cause of workplace fatalities in the UK and the second most common cause of major workplace injuries.
In 2006/2007, 45 people died from a fall from height at work. This represents a slight decrease on the 48 fatalities in 2005/06. However, there has been an increase in the number of employees sustaining major injuries due to falls from height at work, from 3,385 in 2005/06 to 3,409 in 2006/07. For further information, see the HSE publication -
'Statistics of Workplace Fatalities and Injuries: Falls from a Height'.
The HSE is committed to reducing this unnecessary injury toll and have launched a campaign called
'Shattered Lives'.
