PiP Implants- What are the dangers?

PiP implants were recalled from the UK market in 2010 after the regulatory authority- the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency (MHRA) issued an alert on the implants.   The authorities found that the type of gel used in the implants was not approved.  It was in fact non-medical grade silicone – similar to that used in mattresses. 

The French regulatory authority (AFSSAPS) highlighted a high rupture rate in the French implants of 5% and reports linked the silicone to cases of cancer.  UK Authorities recognise that these implants should not have been implanted in women but are unable to identify the full rupture rate for the UK and cannot rule out the possibility of them being toxic.  Effectively, when it comes to the UK the official information just isn’t that clear.
