DePuy Hip Replacement FAQ

What has gone wrong with metal on metal hip replacements?
It has been found that when some metal on metal hip implants, particularly the DePuy ASR XL Acetabular System and ASR Hip Resurfacing System, wear together high levels of cobalt and chromium can be released into the body.  The defective metal on metal hip replacements can cause inflammation, significant pain, muscle erosion and even non cancerous tumours.

Are all metal on metal hip replacements affected?
For the moment only the ASR XL Acetabular System and ASR Hip Resurfacing System have been recalled by manufacturers DePuy (part of Johnson and Johnson).  If you have another type of metal on metal hip replacement and are concerned about the risk or are experiencing pain in the groin or hip area; difficulty walking; clicking of your hip; swelling; numbness or loss of feeling in your leg you should contact our solicitors and your doctor as soon as possible.

What symptoms should I be looking out for?
If you have received one of the DePuy ASR hip replacements you should contact our solicitors and your doctor even if you are not experiencing any symptoms.  Symptoms that may be linked to a defective metal on metal hip replacement include:

  • Pain in the groin or hip area
  • Difficulty walking
  • Clicking of your hip
  • Swelling
  • Numbness or loss of feeling in your leg

If you have received a metal on metal hip replacement in the last eight years and are experiencing any of the above symptoms or are concerned that you are at risk, contact our solicitors and your doctor as soon as possible.

My doctor has contacted me about possible defects with my metal on metal hip replacement, does this mean that I am entitled to compensation?
If you have had a metal on metal hip implant in the last eight years, particularly the DePuy ASR models, and your doctor has contacted you highlighting potential defects, you may have the right to no win no fee compensation.  If your surgeon has recommended a revision operation because of problems with your metal on metal hip implant you may also be entitled to compensation.  Contact us on 0800 0891331 or fill in an online claim form for free legal advice.

What are doctors doing about this?
Surgeons should be reviewing all patients with metal on metal hip replacements.  Those at risk are likely to be contacted for tests and some will be requested to come in for hip revision operations.  If this has happened to you, you should contact Thompsons as soon as possible.  If you are worried that you might be at risk we are also happy to answer any legal questions you may have.
