DEPUY ASR PRODUCT RECALL

In 2010, DePuy Orthopaedics (A Johnson and Johnson company) recalled the DePuy ASR XL Acetabular System and DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System.  The implants were found to be leaking high amounts of cobalt and chromium into the body causing a number of painful symptoms and tissue damage and they were also linked with non-cancerous tumours.

The failure rates of the DePuy ASR are also very high.  According to the British Orthopaedic Association, DePuy ASR failure rates range from 21% after 4 years to 49% after six years. 

Symptoms that may be linked to a defective metal on metal hip replacement include:

• Pain in the groin or hip area
• Difficulty walking
• Clicking of your hip
• Swelling
• Numbness or loss of feeling in your leg
