construction and design management regulations 2007 buttonThe consequences of being struck by a vehicle, especially a specialised vehicle of the type normally seen around a construction sites, can be devastating and often fatal.

Under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007 construction site managers must make sure that the site is arrange to allow both pedestrians and vehicles to travel safely around the site without risk to their health.

The traffic routes must be suitable for the vehicles or pedestrians who are using them to travel safely and the routes must be of a reasonable size and in suitable positions to allow safe passage of all parties.

Precautions must be taken to ensure there is sufficient space between pedestrians and vehicles at all times and if this is not possible there must be arrangements in place to warn the pedestrian at risk of the approaching vehicle.

It is not enough for construction site managers to simply put in place traffic routes and forget about them. They must ensure the routes are inspected, maintained and regularly checked.

The Workplace (Health, Safety, and Welfare) 1992 also apply to construction sites and impose obligations on employers to ensure safety of workers and specifically prevent accidents on traffic routes.
